To create
A Yellowstone Winter, Bob Gilgor braved
sub-zero temperatures to capture the snow-bound creatures and
frosted natural phenomena of Yellowstone National Park found during
the harsh winter season. Having photographed the park through
three other seasons, Gilgor explains, "the ethereal nature of
wintertime overwhelmed me... It was as though one were walking
into a ghostly setting." Gilgor's sense of awe permeates his images
of snow encrusted bison, frosty plumes spewing forth from Old
Faithful, and mist enshrouded Midway Basin. Upon retirement from
dermatology practice in 1998, Gilgor began to pursue his photography
more seriously. As this Chapel Hill resident explains, photography
is "a form of relaxation for me as well as a means of self-expression."
Clearly illustrated by his prints, Gilgor asserts photography
has caused him to "look at people and the environment more carefully,
and helped [him] to be much more aware and appreciative of natural
and man-made beauty."
